Apple Music Sessions: Little Big Town

To celebrate the release of their 10th album Mr. Sun, Little Big Town stopped by Apple Music’s Nashville studio to record an exclusive live performance. The chart-topping, Grammy-winning foursome brought a trio of songs with them, for a set that shows off the dynamic, genre-defying sound that makes them one of country music’s most beloved vocal groups. First up is “Rich Man,” a standout cut off Mr. Sun. The group serves up a faithful take on the stripped-back, hopeful track, which takes stock of what really matters in life. Gentle acoustic guitar and simple percussion accompany rich, complex harmonies, which come to life at each chorus, the heart of which was inspired by the shift in perspective offered by the pandemic. “I think it’s timely,” Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook tells Apple Music. “There seemed to be a lot of people not going back to work and stuff, or people who are like, ‘You know what? I don't want to be part of that anymore. That whole thing where I have no life, I have no family.’ I think that came into focus for a lot of people.” It wouldn’t be a Little Big Town set without “Girl Crush,” their 2014 Grammy-winning smash single about love and jealousy, which still sounds electric performed by the group nearly a decade later. Finally, the band takes on the classic 1995 Oasis hit “Wonderwall,” reimagining the song with a funky groove and, of course, harmonies galore.
